Morning Glories and Cicada Worries

After reading all of your inspirational posts about Morning Glories I went out and bought a whole lot of seeds. I started soaking my Heavenly Blues and planted them on Sunday night. I already have about 20 2 inch long plants with their first sets of leaves. Unfortunately, another set of seeds which I planted three days ago have shown no growth at all.

I can't wait to put the seedlings (which I planted in a window box) out on my terrace next to a fishing wire trellis.

So I have a few questions to pose to you, the seasoned gardeners...

First of all, how long should I expect it to take for my morning glories to grow to the top of my 8 foot balcony overhang? I'd like them to form a privacy screen between my balcony and the windows nearby which overlook it.

Secondly, does anyone have advice on how I should construct the fishing wire trellis so that there will be dense enough coverage to form a screen? The balcony above me is made of concrete, and so I am trying to come up with a way to attach the fishing wire to the ceiling. The best I've come up with is attaching two bamboo poles to either end of the railing and weaving the wire between the two. I'm not really happy with that plan, as I think it might be a little too insecure.

Finally, I have a question about the upcoming hatching of cicadas that is expected this summer. For those of you not in the North East, every 17 years there is a huge hatching of cicadas...1 ½ - 2 ½ inch insects that fly, get caught in your hair, make tons of noise, die all over the place, and for no apparent reason scare the life out of me. Should I expect the Morning Glories to attract them? If so, do you think they would fly as high as an 11th floor apartment? Please get back to me with any thoughts you have on this topic. I feel ridiculous even bringing it up, but it is of concern to me.

Thanks so much for all the help that I have gleaned so far from all the previous post

RE: Morning Glories and Cicada Worries

I pulled up a website on the cicadas by doing a web search on the internet. Like you, I had the same concerns about all the seedlings I had started. To my surprise, I found that the cicadas feed on the roots underground and the only damage done is from when the female lays her eggs in the branches of small trees (larger, more established trees can survive the damage caused with no problem) The site I found also stated that any damaged caused is not from them feeding on your plants.

Hope this helps.
