Good, any vegetable? What do you think to grow vegetable in the balcony.

Nice patio garden. I wish I can get mine started :-) Sherry

Nice! It's that time again, right? I am putting mine together as we speak.

I'm wondering if we have a similar railing? Mine is about 4" in diameter and sits atop plexiglass panels that go nearly to the floor. Do you have the same and if so, how do you attach things to hang from it? It looks like you have clips with wire hanging from it? Do you have plants that attach to the railing? I haven't been able to find anything that fits.

Looks beautiful -- and nicely packed! (I'm also curious what kind of fertilizer you use to grow the cats....) |

So update on the balcony garden...warning to others. I planted tomatoes along with my usual hot peppers (Thai and a purple jalapeno) and got a massive whitefly infestation instead of a harvest. Since I'm in a large hi-rise condo the ladybug option was out and I lost many of my plants--mostly the annual herbs and veggies, but I think my plumie may not make it. I now have those yellow stickies on the plants and my citruses are indoors. They seem okay but I will be vigilant come next year. Caution to all, keep an eye out for whiteflies. The yellow stickies can also get beneficials such as the ladybugs if you're on the ground level--they make rare appearances this high up. But they are a great bellweather for nasties.

Whiteflies are insidious, I had to get rid of all of my sweet potato vine from my porch much earlier than frost would normally do it because of these flies, although they didn't seem interested in the "house plants." Was maybe unnecessary. Tomatoes are such difficult plants, you just never know how they'll do or what they'll "get" besides tomatoes! I didn't know whiteflies like pepper plants too. Maybe if you have some sweet potato vine as a decoy, that might help? From what I've seen, it's worth a try. In a flower bed, I have more SPV near pepper plants and there's no pests on the peppers, just the vines nearby.

Heythere, keyboarg. There's more than potential there, lots of space! And chairs already. You could have some very nice plants there.

a while back I attempted to grow mourning glory seeds. They grew skinny and stretched from my terrace. How could it have been the amount of light when it it seemed like they got enough light?
RE: My balcony garden!
| | |
Which way does this face? Morning glory needs sun alllll day or it will be unhealthy and get spider mites, aphids and/or whiteflies.

Happy January all from sunny Northern Virginia that was recently relisted as zone 7b! I'm on the 15 floor of a condo that houses a bunch of folks who seem to crank their heat so I haven't turned mine on in 2 years. My herbs are doing great outside and I have rainbow Swiss chard growing but something's eating it-could be the cat or stink bugs. I planted bulbs in my unused pots which look like they'll make an early appearance. I also got some young camellias for some winter color. They are healthy but only one flower so far!

Sorry, to Elisamama, I use cheap wreath hangers I got at Home Depot to hold stuff on my railings. They can't hold anything heavy but do hold my patio lights. I just found a nice standing metal hook from World Market ($36) that can hold a hanging basket.
RE: My balcony garden!

Thanks, Lizza. We must have different railings after all. Mine is about 4" round but attached to the plexiglass. All of the hooks I have found don't fit and since I am very high up I need something very secure. Good idea to look into wreath hooks and thanks for the tip about World Market.
