Did my rose bush survive the winter?

Hi,
Last summer was my first summer of gardening (I got addicted quickly, of course). The first plant I bought was a bareroots rose bush which I stuck in a pot and when it suddenly started growing, I wanted more. I have it in an 18inch pot and I left it out all winter with mulch. I don't remember what kind of rose it was and when I bought it I didn't know anything about zones or plants surviving the winter. Now, I'm not sure how to tell if it DID survive. The plant stems are all brown and seem dry where as last summer they were green and flexible. Does this mean anything?
Worse case, I'll just wait and see if anything sprouts, but I am kind of curious. Is there a way to tell?
That said, after I did learn about zones, I bought plants that were appropriate and some that weren't (treating them like annuals) a lot more survived than should have for my zone and we had a brutal winter. My space is backed with all glass so I think it's quite a bit warmer than my zone is supposed to be.
Thanks,
Jamie Sue |

| The one thing that can happen to container roses in winter, is that if the container soil doesn't drain very very well, the roots can rot. Usually roses are pretty hardy. Otherwise, you might want to wait and see what happens. If the roots are okay (and the graft is well below the soil), the plant may sprout from below the soil). I meant to check to see if my mom's roses are sprouting yet... It might be still a bit early. |

| Thanks (as always) Jenny. I'll just wait and see what happens. |
