Stargazer lillies

| Can I plant these in a container, seen a picture of one in one but I am in Zone 5b and not sure.
How big of a container would it need to be? And do I have to dig them up for the winter or just leave them be.
I love the colours of this and the groery store had them on 3 bulbs for $2 so couldn't resist.
Any advice would be appreciated

| Yes, you certainly can. Use a rich loam-based compost with a added 25 per cent extra of grit sand and ericaceous compost or leafmould. Not knowing the actual size of your bulbs I can only estimate a minimum size container of around 30cm top diameter. Maximum size is not an issue so long as the soil does not get soured. The best way to avoid this is to fill in with other low growing plants and in all cases be sure to provide good drainage by having sufficient base holed and adding roughage before the compost; also raise the container on little feet so as not to let the ground impede drainage. Feed well once growing and a tomato feed is ideal. Winter wrap the containers with bubble wrap or fleece in the case of severe frosts;; also cover the surface. Alternatively bring into a frost free environment if convenient. Peter. My Website |

| Here's a photo of mine last year. I plant them new every year because there so little time, so many lilies!! LOL

| Any recommendations for low growing plants? And how low, I'm thinking 8-12 inches or should it be even lower? Thanks |

| Yeah go for it. Be sure the pot is pretty deep- like a foot or so, bulbs like that. I planted my in a big pot with some lobelia underneath just to make it look pretty. My buds have already started showing! They do nicely in the wind, but make sure they get adequate sun. Since you live in zone 5, let them winter outside, but be sure to keep feeding and watering after they bloom, they need thier energy for next year. |

| The pot is 24" deep, was an indoor pot for a tree that I receyled. So I think I'm okay there. Will remember to continue care after flowering. Any suggestions for the low growing plants? |

| How about the lobelia mentioned above? I think I'll do that this year in the pots where I only have lilies. In two large pots I have spring flowering bulbs, and I'm simply going to cut off the foliage (I plant them every year and don't winter over). If I can, I'll plant lobelia there too. It's such a great understory plant. |
