Tulips / Breck's catalog

I was just looking at my "Tulip Shirley"s and thinking that they have to start looking better or I'm going to be really dissapointed. I posted a link to the picture, but they look NOTHING like it. They look a dirty white. I have them in containers.

Then I got home today and what's in my mailbox? A Brecks catalog. I know enough never to order from them because of their terrible track record but their pictures are SO pretty.

I can't help but think that my spring bulbs were dissapointing. They're not all blooming yet but the only ones that look really good are the mixed darwins.

Sigh. Ok, moping over. I'll have pictures back from the developer, I'll show you what I'm talking about when I get them posted.

Here is a link that might be useful: http://www.johnscheepers.com/photos/large/T5758A.jpg

It has been about 25 years since I ordered from Breck's and at that time their service and quality of bulbs was excellent. I am sorry to hear they have gone the way of a lot of companies...downhill.

RE: Tulips / Breck's catalog

My bulbs did terribly this year. This is only my second year of planting so I just assumed I did something wrong, but is it possible the hot cold hot cold weather was wrong for bulbs? I had four tulip bulbs that I meant to move last summer. I dropped them in a bucket and forgot about them. There was still a handful of dirt around them and in Februaryish I discovered the bulbs had started growing, knotted together, and were sprouting through the snow. So, I planted them. They grew happily for about a week and then weathered. In that time the weather kept getting hot and cold. I thought it was my planting that did it, but it seems the same happened to my other bulbs which were starting to come up.
