Need suggestions for very small, shaded urban balcony

My urban condo has a south facing balcony, which is 2.5 feet wide and 12 feet long. It has stucco walls on either side and a stucco wall that is 4 feet high (instead of a railing). The balcony gets light but not direct sun. The wall is about 6 inches thick and the top of the wall gets plenty of sunlight. Is there a way I could secure pots on this wall? I would love to grow Gardenia and Jasmine, do they stand a chance on my balcony? This is my first posting on this website, although I have been reading the posts for several years. Any suggestions on how I could maximize the growing area of my little space would be most appreciated!!

First of all, are you allowed to drill holes in the walls? You may be able to find some window boxes that fit 6" rails, and they may attach to your wall. That way the box would be at the level of the wall, and catch all the available light.

Thanks, msaunt! I may not be allowed to drill holes in the wall. I could not find brackets that would fit on 6" railings. I should visit the nurseries in this area, to see if they carry anything that will serve the purpose.

it's a pretty narrow balcony, but quite long. if your door is in the middle, you could put up 2-3 tier metal plant stands at both ends, so that the plants are elevated to get better light. may be you can fit a board on top of those, running along the edge - so your small pots/boxes can stand on it, though it'll probably require a support in the middle. they sell a lot of small metal tables these days , like 12" square - sort of plant stands, nesting table type as outdoor patio furniture even. you could put sev of those of diff heights near the ledge for a nice grouping. or may be use 2-3 of them and again put a thick board across as a ledge. the area at the bottom probably will be too dark for anything other then full shade plants. but closer to the top gardenia should be OK, if it gets 3-4 hours of sun.
