Attach pots half way up balcony posts?

Has anyone seen or done a method that would safely attach a pot to the upright (metal and fairly sturdy) posts on a balcony?

I'm trying to create more space. LOL

I need something like that too now! LOL

I was just thinking that maybe one of those wall trellis pot hangers might work if it is strapped up against the pole.

Just scanned around and I found what I think what you might be looking for! Since it's basically just a wire ring that is strapped onto a pole, you could possibly make one.

Here is a link that might be useful: Hanging pot ring

Thanks jenny. That's a great site.

Also a flash on inspiration this morning, when I hung a plant from the top railing using a hanger that had a longer vertical shank.

It put the plant a full 9 inches below the others. Maybe jury-rigging one or ???

That sounds like a good idea! I have a couple pots of herbs that I want to sit higher somewhere. My issue has always been that my rail is an odd size and none of the hangers fit it properly, so I always end up coming up with ways to secure them.

How about using wire tyes. Drill 2 holes in your container, put thru the wire tye and fill up. Find where you want to attach it. I have pictures ( as soon as I learn to post them)of variours places I used wire tyes to attach plants.

Last week I had found some open-sided windowbox hangers and wired one of them onto the rail with florist's wire and a couple long lengths of that vinyl-covered wire tie to hold my pots of basil seedlings like this:

Then later I remembered I had some of those plastic zip-ties (I had a container with all different lengths of these) and attached the other one on the rail at this spot to hold my pots of pentas:

The zip-tie method seems more secure to me than even the wire!

The problem is that because of my non-standard rail, none of the so-called "adjustable" hangers adjust enough to clamp on. And as it is, my rail space is now getting more and more limited as I have a number of shrubs and perennials that are or are getting to get tall and I don't want to block them. :-o

..."getting to get tall". Yeah, I think I'm "starting to get" (which is what I meant to write) heat whipped! Time to quit while I'm ahead....lol

have you thought about bolting 2x4 together, sandwiching the posts? Then you can attach any sort of pot-hanger to the wooden cross piece.

I have two windowboxes, which I drilled three holes in on one side near the top, then I used zip-ties to secure it to the railing of my balcony.

Still haven't ordered those hanging pot rings (spanish). But I'm starting to fill up all the other places on my balcony so I'll have to let go of some money. Grimace!

Any suggestion (which I appreciate) that involves drilling or anything like that isn't an option for me. No tools, no strength and no man around to con into it. LOL

Well, if they are the kind of pots with a lip on them (like the white one at the beginning of the post) you could still use zip-ties. They sell them in many sizes (itty-bitty to huge) and colors, so that way you can easily hide it underneath the lip of the pot. I love those stupid things, they are ultra strong! And cheap to boot!

I recently got metal posts on sale for $0.99 from IKEA that came with a set of metal planters. They are definite space savers.
Let's hope the image is attached properly.

nomadic - that's cool looking! I have seen similar poles like that sold to hang a series of spot lights or even for in the shower to hold small shelves. They are usually spring-loaded so they can be secured between the floor and ceiling.

I hope that Jenny is still a member of this board - I refer to a post above with the picture of open sided window hangers "Last week I had found some open-sided windowbox hangers. . . "
I have been to so many places looking for something I could hang off my balcony railing and give me more plants since my floor space is not as great as yours. These plant/window boxes would be absolutely ideal for me. I see that you are i Philadelphia and I'm in Toronto, Ontario but wonder if you recall where you got them and I'm going to hope I can find them up here.

Thanks in advance if you are still here and can give me any information. :)

There is an interesting post in suburban gardens (I think that's what it's called. They filled a shoe rack (the kind that hangs on a door)with soil, and put plants in the shoe holders. It looks pretty cool. Just punch holes in the shoe holders for drainage, put a nail in your post and hang it there.
