Options for dealing w/ highrise wind - also, Japanese Maple?

Hi everyone,

I haven't posted here since we bought our condo - and I am now getting *afternoon* sun on my NW facing balcony. My main concern is the wind we get up here on the 19th floor [technically 18th since there is no floor 13!]. Any recommendations?

Also, I am dying to get a Japanese Maple Crimson Queen. Would this be a good option for the largest "standard" in my balcony garden? I do have a corner that doesn't get much sun or wind so I thought maybe that would work, but I thought I'd ask here before I spend my $$. Thanks :-)

How's the heat in the summer? If you're not careful JMs can get "crispy" in the heat.

The heat? Well, it's Dallas, so highs near 100. But that's why I would keep it in the shade. My local nursery sells JMs so that's a good sign, but buying a tree would be a big investment for me, even a containerized one.

I tend to get upset when stuff dies, but that's life!

Hi there! I'm in close to downtown Houston so I really know what you mean! I'm on the second floor but still get a fair amount of wind, and I just bought a JM a few weeks ago at a great price ($19.99!!!). I placed it in my most protected corner and plan to keep it well watered and misted. I'd like to keep in touch and compare notes this summer, if that's okay with you.

I'm south of Dallas near Cedar Hill and have had a Crimson Queen in a very large pot for 5 years now. It is under a tree and gets a spot of morning sun. I use rocks for mulch because the squirrel-demons won't move them to plant their seeds. If you can keep the wind off it, it should do fine.
