 o
Planter Lining method?

(I am cross posting this to the urban gardening forum as well)

Hi,

We are building some large 2x4x2 (w/l/h)ft fixed planters for our balcony. For looks, mahogany seems good. But Don't think it will stand up to the soil contact? Any ideas on how to line the planters, or alternate materials to use, would be appreciated!

I plant to put rotating herb and annual flowers in some of them, and more permanent small "tree" types in some large ones. Any "tree" type plant selection ideas would help too. The site is very windy and very sunny (south facing).

Thanks,
P.K.

RE: Planter Lining method?

I built some raised beds with a pressure treated frame and corrugated tin sides. I lined them with the heavy duty ground cloth available at Lowe's. In my case, the ground cloth was kind of creating a "bag" inside the pressure treated frame. If you want to keep the wood almost totally dry you might get some pond liner material and punch drain holes in the bottom. Cedar will last fairly long underdamp conditions, but it has a more rough texture than mahogany.
