Propane Tank in Manhattan??
| | |

| Sorry this is a little off topic, but I know a bunch of you are also in nyc.
I just got a gas grill which I ordered through the internet, but I couldn't order a propane tank that way. Does anyone know where I can get a 20lb capacity type 1 cylinder in Manhattan?
I've tried about ten hardware stores now (on the phone) and no one knows.
Thanks - Jamie Sue |

| Thanks. I got the tank, though not in Manhattan. One hardware store I talked to said that no one in Manhattan carries them because the insurance is too high. |

| I saw something on the news about this the other day...They seemed to indicate that while a lot of people have them, they are not actually legal in most of Manhattan..which might be why you can't buy them..:-) |

| There is a guy that has a business that will deliver Propane tanks to your apartment in Manhattan. His name is Tony and his number is 718-626-8111. Be careful not to have it dropped off with a doorman as they tend to get very nervous about it. |

legality of propane in NYC
| | |
If you are in a multi-family dwelling in NYC propane tanks are illegal, period. No exceptions. Single unit homes can have small tanks (20lbs or under). I know a curbside vendor using gas needs to complete a training course in order to connecting the hoses, but that may not apply for use in a single family home. It's a whole lot easier & safer to use charcoal with a chimney starter! --benedita |

| We aren't allowed to use charcoal, either (in Manhattan, anyway). Electric seems to be the only choice. |
