Balcony is Starting to Grow

| I am so excited, everyday I go out on my deck and something else is blooming. It's really beginning to fill in out there. DH says, pretty soon we won't be able to move at the rate things are growing. My Morning Glory's are growing so rapidly, it's scary!
Here are a couple of photos. It's hard to get a good shot because my balcony isn't very big.
Here's one of my Nasturtiums, Cezanne and The President:
Here's one of my tomatoes:
I'm really afraid that they are going to out grow these containers.
Sorry the photos are so big!

Wonderful, Linda. Everything looks great, and I can feel your enthusiasm.

Lovely scene up there. I love that nasturtium with the red flower. And the president looks great!

Wow! That's great! I bet you can't wait until those nasturtiums bloom. I tried some one year and they just had a hard time establishing. The tomatoes look happy and are blooming! Still waiting for my first tomato bloom.

Since that picture, the Nasturtiums have been blooming not stop, in fact they are starting to get heavy and fall over so I am thinking of cutting them back to make them fuller nad less leggy. My tomatoe plants do look very healthy and have been getting a lot of blossoms, unfortunately, so far, the blossoms have not been producing any fruit. They just sit there and look pretty until the start to die and just fade away, leaving no tomatoes behind. I just can't figure out why either. I believe I'm doing everything I'm supposed to be doing. I so fertilize every 2-3 weeks but with a Fish and Seaweed Emulsion that is not high in nitrogen, the stats are something like 1-4-3. Wish I could figure out what it is, I'd hate to go all summer without seeing some matters! Any thoughts?

perhaps you are lacking insects? and sheltered from the wind? if so, try flicking the flowers with your fingers to help with the pollination. hopes that helps!

Agree about doing your own flower flicking or shaking the plant to get some pollination going. Also with some of the hot temperatures recently, tomatoes (and some other veggies) won't set if the temps are too high.

Well my tomatoe plants have grown so big that I've had to move them down into my backyard, also the tomatoes are pooping all over the place, although I have noticed a couple on one plant have BER, only a couple though. How does it usually take before they start to turn red? Some of them have been green for a couple of weeks now! You know the shot of the clematis in the first picture above, "The President", well that was doing so well that it actually bloomed a flower. A pretty deep purple velvet looking blossom, but it ended up falling off after a few days for some reason and I haven't a clue why! I have noticed that there are two other buds that are starting to form underneath and I'd hate to have them fall off too. The plant appears to be very healthy and growing like a weed.

Imagine if one didn't have any backyard to ove the plants. :-p It often takes as long as 30 days to ripen the bigger tomatoes from the time of fruit set. Cherries may ripen faster though.
RE: Nasturium question

Help! I noticed your nice, healthy looking nasturtium plant. I love nasturtium, mostly for the leaves. They really add a nice tangy spice to salads. Unfortunately, no matter how hard I try, I can't get mine to survive. Two years running I tried what looks like the same variety in your picture. They just wither up and die. This year I tried a kind that has dark, small green leaves with deep crimson blooms. One plant is hobbling a long, having produced only one or two blooms. The other plant just withered away. I always thought nasturtium were some of the easiest plants to cultivate--that they are almost akin to a weed--will grow anywhere, tolerate full, hot sun and dryness well and will pretty much flourish if left alone. Any clues as to what I might be doing wrong? Thanks, |

Actually, my Nasturtiums don't do too well in full hot sun, they do better with more shade than sun. Mine get about 4-5 hours of morning sun and they do very well. I try not to water them too much and I do not give them any fertilizer at all. In fact, the soil I use is the cheapest soil I could get at Home Depot. I was told that if you give them fertilizer than you'll get more leaves than you will blossoms, so I don't give them any! Basically that's it. Oh, the most important thing of all is they hate being transplanted! I started my seeds in peat pots and when it came time to transplant them into a container, I inserted the peat pot into the soil, the peat pot will disintegrate. I had a bunch of seedlings and I tried to transplant one from a smaller pot to a larger one and it died. Hope this helps! Good luck Linda
