Plant Suggestions Needed

I have just purchased two window boxes for my balcony and was wondering what type of plants would hold up well in my type of climate. Would really love something colorful as the rest of my plants are green leafy ones. My balcony gets adequate sun but not direct sun because I have a huge tree with branches covering part of the balcony. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks.

What other pants do you have?

You could probably put just about anything in them, particularly those that like part sun or shade. I'm not a connoisseur of design but for my morning sun windowboxes, I have planted various things over the years like begonias, geraniums (pelargoniums), alyssum, petunias, annual salvia, sweet potato vine, vinca vine, impatiens, verbena, snap dragons, and pansies (the latter 2 more for spring). I've probably had other things in them but don't remember right off. Currently I've been planting hummer plants in them. I currently have separate little pots of plants in hangers along my rail including fuchsias, pentas, basil, oregano, firecracker vine, agastache rupestris, portulaca, and some other odds and ends.

If you like sun lovers like marigolds or portulaca or say the sweet potato vine 'Blackie' (which is the dark-leaf form), etc., they may not bloom as much and the foliage of the vine would probably go greenish, but then depending on how much light manages to hit the windowboxes, they may do okay and will appreciate cooler conditions.

Best of luck, allibeth68! I know what you mean about wanting a splash of colour, I had a lot of lettuce, herbs and vines for the longest time. Give strawberries a go! I've fallen in love with my apartment and balcony gardening! I absolutely love having my own little green refuge amongst the bustle of the city below. It's great being able to hang out on the balcony with friends and munch on a few of whatever's fresh - lettuce, wild strawberries... I LOVE IT! Check out a small guide on arizona apartment balcony gardening.
