Last year I had a bunch of Swallowtail catterpillars. When I learned they eat fennel, I when out and bought 10 plants. They seemed pretty happy. They wandered off to make a coccoon. I looked all over but couldn't find any. A short while later, I spotted a swallowtail butterfly. It landed in the fennel and laid about 6 eggs in different spots. Sure enough, soon there was a 2nd generation of 6 catterpillars munching away.
From 35 years ago, I remember having these, Black Swallowtail butterflies, on the turnips in the garden. That experience shaped me as a gardener and a nature lover, also.
