| How long will you be away? That will make a big difference on what you may have to do. A good rule of thumb is to water deeply and then mulch. That will conserve moisture. You can also add moisture-retaining crystals to the soil (eg., "SoilMoist") and then water well. The crystals will swell into a gel and will slowly release the water they absorbed, back into the soil as the soil dries (giving you more time between watering). Also, people have created "resevoirs" out of 1 or 2 liter plastic soda bottles, placing them in the pot with some sort of tiny hole or wick in order to slowly wick water into the pot over time. Another idea is to get a big bucket (like a muck bucket) and place pots in there with perhaps an inch or so of water (I know our family used to do that with houseplants when we went away for a couple weeks - putting them in the tub with some water at the bottom of the tub). The other thing is to have a friend, family member, or neighbor water... |
