How do you people keep your plants watered when you are away on vacation? Does anyone have a way out?

How long will you be away? That will make a big difference on what you may have to do.

A good rule of thumb is to water deeply and then mulch. That will conserve moisture. You can also add moisture-retaining crystals to the soil (eg., "SoilMoist") and then water well. The crystals will swell into a gel and will slowly release the water they absorbed, back into the soil as the soil dries (giving you more time between watering).

Also, people have created "resevoirs" out of 1 or 2 liter plastic soda bottles, placing them in the pot with some sort of tiny hole or wick in order to slowly wick water into the pot over time.

Another idea is to get a big bucket (like a muck bucket) and place pots in there with perhaps an inch or so of water (I know our family used to do that with houseplants when we went away for a couple weeks - putting them in the tub with some water at the bottom of the tub).

The other thing is to have a friend, family member, or neighbor water...

Go to gardeners.com and do a search on "vacation" or "plant sitter".
You will find all kinds of different types available.

oh for me it's a drip irrigation syatem.. just a little emmiter and small tubeing in the pot from the back.. and It's away for weeks ... sure there's alot of sizeing the flow for the evaporation rate of diffrent plants.. that's why you should have it up and running for weeks before you go to avoid either overwatering or underwatering.. and still be there as a reset to the system.. this balance is important to modify as the plants grow.. but should remain pretty constant from week to week.. and allow an abstance for a few weeks without reconfigureing it..
might be nice to have someone in every few days as an observer .. to watch for plants blown over and bakeing on the deck... Gordon

I really like the idea of mositure retaining crystal. Has anyone used it with success? Can it hold water for up to 3-4 weeks?
Plant sitter is a good idea too but only if you have few pots.
Thanks everybody for your help. Really appreciate.

Shilpa - I've used the crystals before although I'm not sure if they will go that long - UNLESS you maybe put your plants in the shade and mulch them too... They do keep the soil pretty moist though.

If you have an outdoor water source/spigot then drip irrigation maybe be your answer for vacation and long term. Acehardware has a 6 ft and 10 ft garden hose (as well as coiled sink hose) and Lowe's has a handy ready to install in 10 min drip irrigation kit specifically for balconies/patios which costs about $20. Check it out it maybe a good value investment for you.
