Yesterday I got a passion flower and was wondering about your experience with it. Its a Passiflora Belotti.

RE: Passion flower

I've had one going on 3 years now. I stick it out on the balcony in late spring and bring it inside under my lights in fall. The P. belotti is a reliable bloomer, with a bloom bud forming at every leaf node along any new growth. Plus it is fragrant.

I have mine now in a 14" container and the vines are trained up 3, 5ft bamboo-look plastic stakes tied at the top like a tee pee. Note that they are rampant growers and will hook onto anything nearby and its roots will fill up a pot quick, fast, and in a hurry. LOL

If you move it in and out, it will delay bloom for a bit until it readjusts, but otherwise, it is pretty carefree. I fertilize with slow-release Osmocote (14-14-14), but anything pretty much is fine (Miracle Grow, Peter's 20-20-20, etc).

RE: Passion flower

I have three of them that I've been enjoying for my second year, a Decaisneana, Incense, and Lady Margret. I put mine out on the deck in as much sun as I can get as soon as the last frost is past and then bring them in again when the first frost is threatening. When I bring them in for the winter I put them in the brightest windows I have (a East and a South). My Lady Margret began blooming in January and hasn't stopped yet, the incense began blooming as soon as it started getting some fuller direct sun, the decaisneana is a bruiser of a vine but is a slower grower and a late bloomer for me (end of October last year - inside, in front of a east window). I give mine just plain water and try to let them get a bit dry in between. I've been told that they bloom better under stess. I do hit them with a bit of Tomato booster once or twice during the growing season (as it's what I have on hand).

good luck! you'll get so much enjoyment out of these plants - I've found that they are truly a plant that WANTS to grow :)

RE: Passion flower

I grow several Passion vines on my balcony. I planted Incense last year and it grew only a couple of feet before winter. I left the plant outside (about 25 deg. F coldest temp) and this year, it has grown over 20 feet! It is now climbing up onto the upstairs neighbors balcony.

After seeing the beautiful flowers, I have gotten hooked. There is an entire forum dedicated to the vine...so check that out. I had been trying to pollinate my incense to get fruit, but apparantely they produce infertile pollen....However a few weeks ago I finally got a fruit! It isn't ripe yet....I am anxiously awaiting! I recently added a carealea and an edulis...which is the fruiting kind.

They are an amazing plant...and you will love it! It is always a conversation starter!

Good luck!

Brett
