Starting a balcony garden

Posted by herestolife Italy (My Page) on

I have a fairly large terrace on an apartment in Rome Italy, I just moved there and I want to start gardening on it. I have never gardened before and don't really know where to start. I am thinking more herb, tree, vegetables, plants and shurbs than flowers. I like flowers though but don't mainly want to grow them. What are some easy things to start off growing that are hard to mess up? Does anyone know what plants are ideal for the Roman climate? Thanks so much!

I'm trying to think what the climate is like in Rome. Is'nt it a little cold in winter but seldom a frost and has a long growing season? That would be the first factor to consider for growing anything or would you bring it inside in winter?
