Containers on balcony

Hi!
Very new at container gardening and wondering how often, if at all, you have to change the soil in the containers - especially with small bushes. And also how often and what kind of plantfood should be used?

RE: Containers on balcony

I top my soil off with Vermont compost every year after removing the top 2-3". I actually don't do it with every plant, and they don't seem to mind very much. I use Osmocote with almost all my plants.

When I plant bulbs every year I do change the soil because it gets pretty used up during the growing season. I don't like to leave the leaves growing during the summer, so I treat my bulbs as annuals every year.

There is a current thread discussing it on the Container Gardening forum. At this writing there is one post advocating it (reuse) and my dissenting opinion with qualifications.
