need suggestions for sort of porch

| Hubby and I are converting an older downtown building into a residence. It faces south with the typical giant plate glass windows down the front. In the center section, we removed the windows and created a "new" front of the house 10 feet back, so there is now a sort of porch area between our front door and the sidewalk. The brick comes up about two feet and then in the opening where the glass was, we put a 30 inch wrought iron fence. We built a planter just behind the fence. I'm not exactly sure what kind of plants would do well in that planter. On the one hand, it gets a lot of sun at the very front due to the southern exposure. But also it is "inside" the building. I'm not sure what would be happy there. I would like perenniels and at least some flowering. Any advice would be appreciated. |

| It's hard for me to picture. Is it sheltered from rain? Or will it be out in the elements... |
