 o
need suggestions for sort of porch

Hubby and I are converting an older downtown building into a residence. It faces south with the typical giant plate glass windows down the front. In the center section, we removed the windows and created a "new" front of the house 10 feet back, so there is now a sort of porch area between our front door and the sidewalk. The brick comes up about two feet and then in the opening where the glass was, we put a 30 inch wrought iron fence. We built a planter just behind the fence. I'm not exactly sure what kind of plants would do well in that planter. On the one hand, it gets a lot of sun at the very front due to the southern exposure. But also it is "inside" the building. I'm not sure what would be happy there. I would like perenniels and at least some flowering. Any advice would be appreciated.

It's hard for me to picture. Is it sheltered from rain? Or will it be out in the elements...
