Hi greekman,
I have never done it but I heard it can be done. In fact, garden centers here in Texas, zone 8, sell plumeria saying you can plant them in large pots and bring them in during the winter. I love plumeria, and miss the smell of them so much from when I used to live in Hawaii.
Good luck,
Leticia

Oh, and a word of advice: this forum is almost always nearly dead, you may want to post your message in the container gardening forum for a higher chance of replies.

I live in south Texas and have four potted Plumerias out on my balcony. One's about a year and a half old that was grown from seed, the other three are maybe 3 or 4 years old. I bring them in when it gets too cold. I've had them for almost two years. My mom also has a couple much larger and older Plumerias in large pots that she brings inside.

Hello! I'm in coastal northern california. I personally have not had luck with plumeria at all (my particular area is quite chilly and misty much of the time), but my mother lives much more inland-- a very mediterranean climate-- and she has 2 plumeria plants which are both doing quite well. One of them, she purchased as a plant about a foot tall or so, and now (2 years later) it's about 3 feet tall. She keeps it indoors, after learning that her summers were a bit too hot for them, and her winter temps are a bit too cold for them. But in her house, it's quite happy. Her second plumeria plant is one she grew from seed, and is quite small still, but is happy to live inside the house as well. Hope this helps!

bramasole is right, this forum is virtually dead. Shame, some excellent posts in the past. Container gardening is where everyone has gone now.
Hey, d'you think it's an upwardly mobile thingy? Like, people who used to post on here have moved on from balconies to real houses wih gardens? And the new people with only balconies wouldn't be seen dead on this site because it's old-fashioned and bleeurgh? But containers are like, still cool? Just a theory...from an Englishwoman in Greece.

A lady at my apartment grows them on her balcony. It faces west into a parking lot, but it's sheltered enough to moderate temperatures. Good luck!

Hi greekman,
You should have no trouble growing plumeria in you region. I live in Lebanon and I started a piece of 15cm. stem I found by the curb on a walk one day. Took it home and put it in a bit of water till it rooted (Less than a week) and then potted it up. It has been with me now 4 years and is becoming a really shapely small tree. I have potted it in to a larger container once, doesn't need it this year. I will take off the top few inches of soil and replace it with new soil mixed with a bit of manure and compost. I keep mine on the balcony throughout the winter and it will loose its leaves...all of them. Mine is just starting to put out new leaves and now I am looking forward to a summer with its lovely blossoms!

Hi Everyone,
I am from Hawaii and miss plumeria so much. The scent is dizzying! The leaves fall off in the winter, even in Hawaii where only a few stay on the tree. Then in the spring, leaves burst forth followed by those heavily perfumed flowers which we string into leis. Reading your posts have been so wonderful. I should try to grow a plumeria here in Kansas and just bring it in during the long winters. Thanks for the happiness, everyone.
