WANTED: Scheflera bonsai died

My shef was growing great for about 4 years. I bought it from Lowes. The tree was happy. I potted in up into a 5 gallon container half bonsai soil and half sphagnum peat moss. It grew like a weed for 2 years then started to slow down. The winters it was in the basement. Summers it was outside. I have a greenhouse. I put it in this year. Now it turned just a bit yellow. I decided to put in a bonsai pot then it needed a trim anyways. I did all that and then planted it into a shallow bonsai pot. Then it turned brown and the roots rotted away.

Why?

Yellow leaves are often a sign of iron deficiency. If you see that, chelated iron should be added to the soil.
