I'm wondering why you want it to die :-).

It's not uncommon for them to defoliate when you've stressed them. As long as tips show good color, it will be fine.

I have a few that didn't like 32 degree temps. They will probably leaf back out in the spring.

An easy way to tell if a plant that has defoliated is alive or dead is to make a little scratch on the bark. If it's green directly beneath the outer bark, it's living. If not, it's dead.
