Port. Afra bonsai question

I have a port. afra I bought a few months back that has been sitting out on my deck. It has so many branches and leaves I was thinking of taking a few cuttings and starting a few "Bonsai" plants from it. But when I see the Port. Afra bonsai plants online they have extremly thick trunks. Is that something that happens over time on its own or do I need to do something specific to the plant to get the trunk to beef out like that?
Any other tips (because Im new to bonsai shaping) for this plant would be greatly appreciated. Thanks
