This is a tropical native to Puerto Rico. What I have is the top section of an air layered tree that I did last year. My problem is that new root development only occured on the left side and I am wondering if I can do a thread graft to use 1 or 2 of the flexible shoots from the left and bring them through the trunk to come out on the right side. The right side of the tree is pretty much completly void of growth and I'm hoping to try this technique but I'm not sure it can be done with tropicals like this.

Hey Jonny,

I dont see why the method you mentioned wouldnt work. Of course this time of year the best thing to do in addition to GOOD artifical light and a warm area would be to put the pot on a heating pad. I get the heat pads from Eckerd drugs which is now some other name. There relativly inexpensive and I haven't electrocuted my self....yet.

I don't know what I'm going to do. I might take it back to the 1st branch, there really isn't any taper on this tree.
I guess the thread graft would work, but the long term picture looks better with some taper and more branching.

You can also get a heating pad designed for this purpose and less risk of shock. Park seed is but one (the only I can think up right now) of the places that offer these. Seed starting supplies should turn up a heating pad. You can get as much or as little protection via thermostat as you can handle.

ps. I too have used a normal heating pad, but be careful and I wouldn't recommend it.
