I think it is "goldflame". It turns about 4 different colors during the growing season, and the roots will turn scarlet here soon as well.

Do you mean Spirea x 'bumalda' Goldflame? It is a very attractive tree you have there. I am thinking of using some and after seeing your's in ground training for mine begin's this spring! Again great color and glad you shared it. -G

You are correct - this plant was mislabeled at the local nursery where I bought it. Full sun brings out the best color, but they need a lot of water. They are fun as they grow like a weed, I almost had problems keeping up with it.

Dave did you do the initial training on this tree? Do you know how long it took to develope that single trunk? Do you have to fight off suckering from the base of the tree or roots often? I'm really quite interested to here more about your spirea. -G

Yes, it has been in training two years, but only this year cut way back, put in a flat pot and restyled at the suggestion of my bonsai teacher. This was a nursery shrub in a two gallon pot- there are dozens more like it where I got it. It was a single trunk when I bought it. Some species seem to trunk up a little easier than others which have multiple skinny trunks. Yes there are suckers, but since you are pruning the plant almost constantly it is easy to take care of them. I have another spirea with a 2 inch trunk in training I will post a picture of.

Is that a slanting style or semi cascade,its very nicely shaped and great colour!
So is this S.japonica as stated in the first posting or a x 'bumalda' Goldflame?

You are correct, it is bumalde. I think it is a slanting/exposed roots style, but I am going to change the angle this spring to a little more upright. James if I find a good one this spring I will let you know.
