All the buds (other than flower buds) that formed after you pruned will contain a new apical meristem, which means they aren't just leaves, they are branches that will continue to produce leaf after leaf until the apical meristem is removed. At that point, latent buds in leaf axils (crotch where the leaf is attached to the branch) immediately proximal to (behind) the pruning cut will become active and produce more new branches, each with their own apices (growing tips).

Thanks to the both of you for the info. Will trim back the leaves like you suggested. Escambron comes out of Porto-Rico, some what new to bonsai, easy to work with takes a lot of abuse. Good for the beginner like myself.
