Cryptomeria 'tansu' bonsai - cold temps; care

Howdy, folks!

My dear sister gave me a little Japanese "Cedar" - cryptomeria tansu - for my birthday, and I'd like to keep it alive (and thriving) if I can.

The plant is still in the nursery container, a four-by-four inch plastic affair, although I have a six-by-eight inch ceramic pot to which I'll transplant this spring.

I have a simple print-out on care instructions, and I've read what I can at these garden Forums. However, several Threads that might have had information are missing from the archive.

This is an outdoor plant. I live in northern California, in the foothills, 33 miles north-east of Sacramento. Hot dry summers, mildish winters (29°F this morning; 18°F low temp a few weeks ago) - snow over an inch deep is a rarity.

1). I've read about mulching for similar plants (thanks, Lucy!), and want to know if I can mulch similarly.

2). I have full sun available (if necessary) - East, South, and South-West.

3). I do not have a covered porch, basement, or garage with appropriate windows.

I'll get some pictures when I can!

Thanks again!

Josh
