Gross White Bulbs

Since I got it at Christmas my bonsai has been progressively dropping leaves. So I decided to invesatigate by poking around in the soil. Lo and behold -- I found these gross little white things built around my clips in the soil. i took a picture: take a look and see if you have any idea what they are and more importantly how to get rid of them. I don't think they're mealy bugs... but not sure. Thank you!!

I can not tell but it might be a spider egg sac or a fungus of some sort. Did it grow on the wire or did you poke it? Is it hollow or solid?
Even better, what kind of tree do you have? Did this come from a bonsai shop or walmart like store?
If you could provide us with more info we can offer better answers.

It grew on the wire like that. It's sort of soft-hollow feeling when I poke it but im afraid to actually rip it open. My friend says it's a 'tea tree' - he got it from a bonsai store. It has green sort of waxy tear-shaped leaves and a bumpy trunk. I hope that helps.
