Bogus bonsai (I think)

Hi -- We were given this "bonsai" about three years ago. It's gotten so big, I'm not sure it's really a bonsai. It's still in the same tiny pot it came in (in the picture it's sitting on a little stand inside of the big green pot.

Does anyone know what plant this actually is? Does it need to be repotted in something larger than its little rectangular bonsai pot? Any other hints about its care you can share with me?

Thanks in advance for any advice you can give me.

Kapok. They get huge. I gave away a 10' one last year as no room for it. They sell these things all the time as bonsai but it is not a good choice really.
Put it in a bigger pot & stick it on the patio.
Tally HO!

Okay! Sounds good to me. I was thinking maybe it was something I did (or didn't) do to it to keep it small, thought you guys might rake me over the coals for ruining a bonsai.

Thanks much.

Hate to correct people, but that is definately not a Kapok. It is known as a "money tree", more correctly, a Pachira aquatica.

Nigel is correct - it's a member of the chestnut family and will grow to enormous size in nature.

While they make poor bonsai, it can be done with constant leaf pruning in an attempt to keep the foliage small. Several small trees bound together is much better than using a single tree. However, you'll never achieve a classic bonsai shape.

That looks like a fun project
