Great basin natives as bonsai

Here in the great Basin we have many interesting plants. Have you heard of anyone trying them as a bonsai? Are they rare as bonsai because they are too difficult to grow or just not as popular?

Cercocarpus,Mountain-mahogany. Slow growing I know

Pinion pine, slow growing too.

Pinus contorta subsp. Murrayana, Lodgepole Pine Tamarack Pine

Manzanita

So far I have collected some mountain mahogany and pinion pine seed. Just curious as to my chance of success with them as bonsai.

The pines are used all the time, the mahogany I've never heard of as bonsai, but hopefully someone else will have.

I considered Manzanita, but never went through with it.

On this side of the Sierras, I've seen many naturally occurring Lodgepole bonsai.
They really are striking little pines growing in granite cracks.
