these are succulents, well, you know that, but, being that means all you want to do with them you do during active growing season. But I would let these to grow undisturbed for a year or two and only then start working with them. Your plants look fine, just give them time

The best advice I can give is -if you want to bulk it up, over pot it and let it grow-it will put on a huge amount of growth over the summer in a 14' + pot. A thicker base trunk will develop if you initially plant it a little deeper in the soil. I use regular potting soil and treat it more like a tropical than a succulent. You will also get tons of little purple flowers that the hummingbirds like. --Once you establish your main trunk remove the suckers when they are small to avoid big scars. I pretty much prune mine year round to maintain it now.
