bonsai repotting

Help. I bought a ginseng ficus bonsai from walmart a week ago. It had those rocks glued on top of the soil, which i removed a couple days later after a bit of research, and it looked fine. When i brought it home the leaves started to die right away. I bought a fluorescent light hoping that that would help and it did a little. All the leaves that were there when i purchased it are now completely dead, but it has new growths at the bases of its stems with tiny leaves. I know the soil needs to be changed because it drains very slowly and thus causing a fungus gnat problem. What i need to know is if it is okay that i change the soil that its in while its in this fragile state, or should i leave it in the soil that its in now until it is a little healthier. Or... Is all hope lost?
