I'm pretty sure you have to cold stratify the seed/s for around three months before they will germinate. I cold stratify my seeds by placing them in a container of moistened vermiculite and leave them in the fridge. You can also fold them in a moist paper towel and place them in a zip-lock bag (be sure to wring out all the water from the paper towel so that its just moist) If you need to do this though make sure the soil is moist by NOT wet, or the seeds will rot. Also be sure to check every 30 days or so to make sure none have sprouted yet (as a few sometimes will) and if one or two have remove the seedling and plant it. Other than a stray every once in a while they will germinate in spring once you take them out of the fridge and sow them.

Thanks for the reply. I think oaks in the white oak group don't need the cold stratification, but I'm not sure, I will see what the tree forum folks think.

After reading my reply post I realized it sounds rude. sorry. I get what you're saying, the cold storage will prevent ( or slow) germination better than reg temp storage. Even if cold stratification isn't needed.

You should put them into some compost and put them into a bag in the fridge until you want them to sprout, then take them out and plant them.
