Hello:
I have a fukien tea bonsai, a couple of days ago it was infected by some bugs, I did some research and found out that a pesticide could be created by the mixture of soap, water, and vegetable oil.... I did it and spray it all over the bonsai but the results were leaves turning black and falling off, another effect was that leaves become fragile and as soon as I touch them they will fall of... any help will be really appreciate it thanks.

What type of bugs were they?

I believe they were mites since they were at the bottom of the leaves and green or black, also some leaves were sticky so I decided to used that pesticide by mixing different substance since there were many webpages telling that it was an efficient and economic way. Did I do something wrong? Is fukien tea vulnerable to this quemical?... what can I do to save it? .... Thank you.

Most likely scale, ass the plant is a magnet for the pest. Obviously the plant IS vulnerable to whatever you sprayed on it - it's a bummer, but things like that happen sometimes. All you can do is wait & see if the plant comes back. Keep it warm (70*) and in good light. Be VERY careful not to over-water, as w/o foliage it's very easy to do. Let 'damp' be your watchword. Do not fertilize until you see good new growth.

It's very important to determine exactly what pest you have before you act.

If it was scale (look up scale insects to see if they match) may be the cause of the damage.

I really hesitate to reccomend the home remedy for these things since so much can go wrong. The soap you used, was it just average detergent or was it an organic/biodegradeable dishsoap (there is a difference between soap and detergent apparently) that can screw up the plant's functioning as would adding the oil.

First thing's first, use water to help move off some of the soap, so it can breathe again, and if it's scale you can leave it be (though keep it away from other plants) for now. Once it has had a chance to recover go out and get something like All Seasons Horticultural oil (it can be attatched to your hose) and give it a good shower.

You may want to also scrape off (again, if they are scale bugs) the bugs with a toothpick. Since scale bugs can be a b*tch (Seriously Gardenweb? I can't use a word like that but others are fine?) to get rid of you will probably want to re-apply the oil every week to two weeks.

The good thing about scale is that they don't do a whole lot of long lasting damage and are most of a pest than a predator.

Thank you very much for your advise I really appreciate it. I already rinse my bonsai to get rid out of some soap and I know it is still alive since it is still green under the branches once I scratch a little bit of it.... Im just gonna wait and see if it is going to make it trough hopefully it will do .... once again thank you for your advice.
