When to put seedlings in the ground?

So I have a bunch of seedlings that are just sprouting I my greenhouse. Mostly various maples, and a few crabapples. I'm wondering should I plant them in the ground this spring or wait until fall, or even wait until next year. And also when they are in the ground should I root prune them every year. This will be my first time trying to grow them in the ground for a few years. I have a Japanese maple bonsai I grew from seed that is 4 years old, but it's been in a pot it's whole life. Thanks in advance for any help.

Hi - I'd put them in as soon as the last frost has passed and leave them for life (or at least until you decide to pot them), though somewhere a bit protected from strong winds. Don't dig them up to root prune them - that would only ever be done once in pots and only to get them into a pot that is a bit too small, not one that requires taking most of the ball off young plants.
