| I took a cutting from and indoor ficus about a month ago. It has not yet rooted, It is in partial morning sun, for almost a month has been under a plastic bag and the leaves are starting to fall off. I noticed some small red cockroach-looking "bugs" on the plant. I removed all of the visible ones. ( I already sprayed with insecticide a week ago.) When I went to look at the original plant that I took the cutting from I saw the same thing. What is wrong with the tree? I will post some pictures in the gallery to help. Thanks.

Is it in soil or water? What's the temperature like there? Is there condensation in the bag, do you water the soil, and has it occurred to you that the insecticide might be responsible for the leaves falling (depending on what you used)? Sounds like it's not really worth bothering at this point - can you not just find an inexpensive Ficus somewhere else - they're all over the place.

My best success with cuttings on a ficus went like this: I took a pencil width branch, stripped off all the branches and leaves so it looked like, well, a pencil. I cut the one end at an angle, dipped it in dip n grow. I left it in full sun in a pot that was watered once a day. About a month later, I had a rooted tree with leaves. Keep in mind, if you keep leaves on the plant it will increase the demmand for water. With out roots, the plant will dry and die quickly. So strip all the leaves, then hand in hand, the plant will grow new leaves with the new roots.

ok thanks bill ftmyers . So should I go ahead and strip it of its leaves and branches, or is it too late for that? And also, I have only been spraying small amounts of water into the the soil, should I start regularly watering it? Thanks. -Jonathan

Enough so the soil around the cutting's end gets a good drink every day and stays a bit moist in between.

I believe it's too late for your cutting, but feel free to strip away!
