Removing seed coat

Hello again everyone. I decided to check my potted seeds (J Red Maple)to see if they were dead. I carefully removed the seed coats from three and the embryos? were starting to grow. Can I still plant these or won't they grow since I removed the coat?

Plant them.

Thanks, Lucy, That's what I thought. Also, do Black Pine seeds need the float and fridge method?

Yes they do (sorry!).

Shelley,

You wrote: "do Black Pine seeds need the float and fridge method?"

No, actually it is not required. The Bonsai today book on Pines suggests storing them in a cool dry place and soaking for 3 days before planting in the spring. Lewis Hill in the volume "Secrets of plant propagation" suggests much the same. If you follow the link below you will find that it is that authors opinion that it is not required but may speed germination.

I have successfully germinated another 2 needle pine species (Scots Pine) with no stratification.

Thanks Norm, Good info on that page. I'll try both ways and update you on results!

Shelley,

That certainly is a good approach. It never hurts to learn things for yourself.
