new tree re-potting

Last fall I bought a fire-thorn on sale in a 3 gallon pot. After a drastic pruning, it has a nicely shaped trunk with only a couple of apical branches. (the trunk is about 1.5" in dia.) The roots have been untouched.
Should the tree's roots be pruned in the spring and planted in a grow pot Or left to grow for 1 or 2 years before any more work is done on the tree..

If the tree is strait from the nursery I would defiantly say the roots should be looked at and most likely pruned. Just remember not to remove more than 1/3 of the root mass. I would keep the trimming down to a minimal this year though (if you end up doing so) only removing any overly long or thick roots. I would also get some free draining soil mixture to repot it in.

Usually concerning deciduous trees the best time to repot/root trim is in early spring right as the buds begin to swell. Since you are talking about a evergreen species though the distinctions can be a little different. Without getting to deep into it I would say it should be fine to do any root trimming and a repot around late March/Early April before the tree becomes active for the year. I generally repot my trees some time around mid April, (I live in Chicago Zone 5) you may need to do so a little earlier since you live in a slightly warmer zone.

Thanks Mike.
That's the help I was hoping for.
