Correcting a Mallsai

Hello everyone,

Thought I would also post about a mallsai I picked up from Lowes about 2 months ago. It was all ready to go for Christmas and had a bow and everything!

But then, I saved it:

I've been debating this trees future for quite a bit and thought this was probably the best way to go:

Thoughts?

Zone is messed up

I'm not really in Zone 10, more like 7a VA. Not sure why that happened....

RE: Correcting a Mallsai

hard to give any actual shaping advice seeing as the ficus hasn't really developed any real branch structure yet. Could make a nice informal upright in a few years. I would just start a heavy fertilizing schedule starting in spring to give a bulk of growth and go from there.

The Nebari looks to be very poor from the appearance of the first image. I would consider doing a tourniquet layering (maybe where the white string is wrapped around the trunk near the base of the tree??) to give it a better even root spread, which will be important for the tree to evenly and adequately absorb water and nutrients (as well as for aesthetic reasons).
