| Hi
A few months ago after attending a local Bonsai show I decided to start growing my own coral tree. I have transplanted my little tree into a bonsai pot and it has approx 6 leaves, the first two leaves are really large. It is such a great tree to start on as it grows really quickly and it is quite exciting to watch. I feel like a kid again observing the little leaves sprouting and growing. I started growing it indoors but after hearing that trees don't like to be inside I decided to put it outside in the sun for a day (first mistake I think) as my first two leaves got a bit sun burnt. So I took it back inside and after a while trimmed one of the most sun burnt leaves off (by now it had three leaves so I left myself two). I have subsequently moved it outdoors permanently to a place that is half shade with a little morning sun. Please could anyone give me a few beginner tips on how to carry on, when should I first trim my tree or if I should just leave it to grow for a few more months? Any info for this newbie would be appreciated. |

| I am no bonsai expert, I started my first projects last year so take my advice with a grain of salt. I would let them grow as much as possible then prune back. my neighbour has been doing this for years with maple trees so i am learning from him. My project was a bonsai chilli, which I let grow to approximately 7" then cut down, trimmed the root ball and foliage and replanted in a gallon pot. Its doing quite well, I was pretty surprised at how quickly you can establish a bonsai, though it needs significant training and time to let the roots wooden over a bit. |
