JR Maple Seedling, looks shriveled!

Hello everyone! My little J Red Maple 1yr old seedling looks shriveled at the tip. It's in a good mix in a 3" starter pot, under lights 16 hrs/day. Is it a goner, or anything I can do? Thanks!
Shelley

Just a few questions: Is it outdoors? Was it allowed to go dormant in autumn?

At this time of year Japanese Maples should not have any non-shriveled leaves if growing in the northern hemisphere - Maples need a dormant period each winter. If it is dormant it doesn't need light until it resprouts in spring.

If it is still growing now, in February, I don't know if it will survive - maybe others here will know what to do.

You didn't say what kind of soil it's in or how often you water it... if you're keeping it wet, that could be a problem as it should definitely be allowed to dry on top and just a bit more between times, and needs a sandier gritty mix vs soggy peat, and doesn't particularly need very acidic conditions.

It's in a lava rock, peat mix. I don't know if it was dormant in the fall, I recieved it in January, bareroot, about 4" long. It doesn't have any leaves or buds yet. I only water it when the top 1/2" is dry, every few days.

It's probably dormant now, being shipped to you barerooted and having no leaves. You can test scratch the bark of a tree to see if it is still green underneath, but I wouldn't recommend that on a small seedling.

It should be outside so it can take whatever clues it needs from the weather, and it should sprout in spring. If you keep it inside, it may not start its spring growth and could die.

Soggy soil, watered too often (for that soil which never drains) equals trouble. Let it dry out more between times.

Thanks, Lucy, scenter, and coda. I'm pretty new to this as you've probably guessed. But a person only learns by trying new things.

Shelly

It's not a good idea to move a bare root plant outdoors where it's going to freeze right after potting it up. You'll kill it. The roots have been disturbed and can't handle being frozen.

That's why plants are repotted in spring or early fall so the root system has 6 weeks or so to recover before weather gets real hot or cold depending on what time of year you do it.

Thanks, Randy. I actually was NOT going to put it outside right now. That just didn't sound right.
