Goldenrain Tree as Bonsai

A year ago December.....I collected some seeds from a goldenrain tree that was along the road.After forgetting them in the car/heat, I planted them in a pot and five have come up shortly after planting.They have been "absolutely neglected" still all in one little pot and are now about 6-8inches tall.I actually thought they were dead....but there is "growth" and will leaf out come next month.Anyway.....I am so amazed at what I found when repotting - two of the seedlings have actually grown with their trunks in a "spring/coil" shape!!! Amazing to me!I was wondering if anyone has used this species of flowering tree for their Bonsai and if they've had this extraodinary,amazing growth pattern,and what does the goldenrain tree need or don't attempt to do with Bonsai Training.Does it like dry/wet? I swear, these little ones have corkscrewed themselves and it is quite unique for me. Any help/info on the GoldenRain Tree would be most appreciated.

Carolin,I googled goldenrain tree and it says that they will make bonsai.. there was a pic. of one in a pot. the brazilian rain tree makes a great tropical tree with interesting foliage it closes up at night like it is asleep.. i would think golden would be a outside tree for you...google check it out.. hope this helps john

Thanks soooo much, I wish I could send a photo of these two seedlings (best of the five)......they have "contorted" by themselves,guess following the light as their pots were kicked around the garden and they grew towards the light.They are absolutely "corkscrewed" from the bottom up,then they slowly "swirl" upward now,with no leaves as it's winter,but bud/leaf nodes show new growth coming.They had neglect,cold,heat...you name it,but are the best of my "bonsai" yearling babies yet. I start everything from seed, as I guess it's the maternal instinct in me, I nurture everything.Maybe I could get my son to get a picture on the website.Amazing little ones, now almost 8in tall.I will get more seeds for sure and maybe have some to share. Thank You for checking on these for me !!! : )

I'm in NY and have a large one in my yard. It's about 35 yrs old. I planted it as a small seedling. It drops seeds all over and I pull them up. They can grow in cement. They really are weed trees, but grown alone it is quite pretty. Blooms in July. It loses its leaves in winter, has survived very cold winters without any damage. Leafs out in April/May.

We were moving this year and I planted a few in small pots. They grew all summer and were totally neglected also. They were sitting in a rubbermaid container filled with water (I forgot them and rain collected). Didn't phase them and my daughter planted them in her yard. I had planned to bonsai them. I think they can take anything. Have fun!

IF you have not seperated your little trees.i would do that give them their own growing space.. good luck with them try to send pics jonn
