Collected Coast live Oak

6 weeks ago I collected a live oak from a neighbors yard. The tree has a 3" dia trunk and is 36" high. I plan to shorten it significantly over time, it has a short trunk wiht great lower branching so I think it will be a good addition to my collection.
My question, should I shorten the trunk and the branching now, or should I let it recover from the transplant first.
I've heard a lot of conflicting information about the next step with this tree.

Short answer is to let it recover for as long as possible, but as it is now early spring (sort of!) I'd be interested to know where you have it now, in what container, etc.

The tree is in a large landscapers pot. When I collected it we had already had some significant rain, so the feeder roots were excellent, although I did need to cut some of the tap roots when I planted it. I have included a picture of the tree. Watch for anther message soon with the pic

I've finally succeeded in uploading a picture of my tree to the bonsai gallery, I wish you could upload to this forum as well, does anyone know any tricks?

Photobucket works well. Use one of the codes (I forget which) and paste it here.

Let it recover. I have hundreds of live oaks and a friend of mine tried to bonsai an older specimen and it promptly died. I hope you have better luck. They really have a large taproot making them hard to transplant. If you would like some seedlings this has been a bumper crop year and I am weeding hundreds of them out of my landscaping. They really don't take as long to grow as they say they do, and they are more trainable when small.

If you use Photobucket, you copy the HTML code under the photo and paste it here in the body of your posting. Then hit the preview button and you should see your pic.
