Swiss mt. pine and Austrian pine

In November I bought an Austrian pine.
Are these both mugo Pine?
If they are not, are they both the same as far as training for bonsai?
Are August and September the best for transplanting?
Thanks for your help.

RE: Swiss mt. pine and Austrian pine

Hello Paul,

I believe that the Swiss Mountain Pine is another common name for the mugho pine (Pinus mugo), but the Austrian Pine is definitely not (Pinus nigra). It's nice, when purchasing plants, to have them labelled with the Latin botanical names, simply because a certain plant (i.e. the mugho pine) can have several common names.

I'm not too sure if the training regiments for both would be the same; there are probably some differences between the two. Vance Wood is a well-known figure who deals with mugho pines; a simple google search will give you several results of his work.

Hi paul
Since Audric trying to help you, I join too.^^
you are in zone6, you must be in inland of Masachusetts.
Because of short growing season of mass and harsh winter conditon, spring is better to transplanting. zone 7,8, 9 you can transplant in early to mid fall.

Autrian pine needle and twig is softer than mugo pine and grow much taller.

Hi Mike
Nice to see you in this forum.
This area is coastal zone 6A or sunset zone 34
ZONE 34. Lowlands and Coast from Gettysburg to North of Boston. I live on the coast north of Boston.
I picked up the tree in October and air layered the top 12 inches, which are going to be cut off anyway. The needles still look healthy.
Vance Wood's area is coolder. I was hoping he had experiance with both and would contribute.
Paul
