What do you do with your dead bonsai?

An odd question but thought I would ask. A friend of mine was given a Chinese Elm for her birthday and the tree ended up dead within a month. She ended up throwing it out after it being outside for 2 months which I thought was a shame.

Dead branches on bonsai are very sought after in a lot of styles and I find myself that dead bonsai are quite attractive. I am just wondering what everyone does with dead trees.

Some of us have been known to keep particularly attractive ones on a mantel somewhere for some time! But most probably should go in the compost as they will eventually rot, or become attractive to bugs seeking shelter.

One of my friends used a dead bonsai as an "art" piece in a pot with a moonflower (I think that's what they're called).

A dead bonsai with old roots wrapped around/embedded in a rock would be very cool, too.

I might give it a treatment (a sealant of some type) to help prevent the bugs and the rot (which Lucy mentions will become the problem).

I had people who built model train set-ups ask me to save any dead bonsai and they incorporated them into their lay outs.

Use dead conifers in forest plantings.

I've used some for mini Halloween scenes, ( and kindling).
