Question Re Umbrella Bonsai

I've been absent from this Forum for some time because I haven't had much to contribute but I've been a member for a long time. However, I've just read a post in another part of this Forum about an "Umbrella Bonsai". Please tell me what an Umbrella Bonsai is? I've come across that name applied to a Schefflera somewhere in my readings but is this what is being discussed here? If not, what is it?

If' we're talking about Shceffs here,I have a good deal of experience with them and I can tell you that they definitely hate soggy roots and need a well-draining soil. They make aerial roots readily and can thus be easily trained to create little jungles.

They are often called umbrella plants, but there is also a common name of another tree that's called Umbrella pine, but is actually a Sciadadopytis (see why Latin names are so much better?) and not a pine at all, and probably a lot less likely to be confused here as it's not at all common, and is grown outdoors.

The Sciadadopytis is the Japanese Umbrella-pine. The umbrella plant usually used for bonsai is probably Schefflera arboricola.

And yes,krystyna, you're correct about using a well-draining soil. I love the jungle-type plantings as bonsai.
