Do you mean Pachira aquatica, the Money Tree?

If so, this plant thrives in well draining soil, watered thoroughly from the top (not the bottom).

The reason these plants rot so often is due to improper drainage and moisture retentive soil.

Definitely water it from the top, don't screw with a bucket. I have a tank sprayer like people use to mix weed killer and such in. I will it with water and water all my plants with that from the top.
It needs a gritty mix for sure, as Josh stated.
