I'm in the process of looking. I know nothing about grape vines as Bonsai however, in the past there was a guy from Cali. who was active in the forum. He bacame hooked on them and produced, over a period of a few years, some downright outstanding examples cultured as Bonsai. I will try and find some information for you.

Those vines look so cool. I may try to find some old vines around here and dig them up and do what your doing. How often do you prune the roots back ? Is the vines easy to take care of ?

I have a 2 year old muscadine grape vine with no leafs at all. I can't tell if its even alive. When actually do they go out of their dormant state and start new growths ?

The one shown above didn't leaf out until April 28th.
Buds began to show April 14th.

I only pruned the roots once, when a friend and I dug it up. Prune the roots when they've
completely colonized the mix...when you see roots escaping the drain holes or when the roots
begin to distort the shape of the container.

The plant we dug up had been growing in nearly complete shade beneath two sweetbay magnolias.
We didn't know if it would have enough vitality to survive the trauma...but it came through fine.
