| Two part question;
I have a box leaf fig for 3 years now. I get three or four fruit each year, but the tree just is not growing or adding leaves. It appears healthy, no fungus or funny things happening. It just wont grow. HELP?! I have a hong kong komquat. It is tall and gangley. Advice on pruning, wiring and feeding? |

| Hi - can you give information on where you keep it (and where you live), how much you water, how often, what soil mix it's in, what kind of humidity and temperature, as well as the lighting situation? How long have you had it and when (if?) was it last repotted - with or without root reduction? |

| If a tree in a container isn't growing and isn't exhibiting any signs of nutritional deficiencies, the odds overwhelmingly favor the need for repotting - not just potting up - repotting, which includes root pruning and a change of soil to something appropriate for the plant. I'll assume your plant needs repotting - forgive if I'm wrong, please. Experienced container gardeners and bonsai practitioners can usually tell a root bound tree at a glance. Marked decrease in the distance between leaf bundle scars, stalled branch/stem extension, and that tufted look of foliage growing at the tips of branches and die-back of interior foliage are all tells. Even though we learn (to a certain degree in bonsai) to use stress often to bend the plant to our wills (e.g., growing a plant somewhat tight on purpose to help shorten internodes and reduce leaf size), we should be aware that this stress does have a negative impact on growth. Plants must grow to live. If they are not growing, they are dying (Dr. Alex Shigo). Al |
