| I would love for some of you more experienced members/artisans to take a look at my blog about my bonsai, Wilson, and make any comments you can think of.
Thanx in advance. Joshua

| Hello Joshua, and welcome to the forum and the art. Wilson doesn't look to be very happy, and this is probably not your fault. Evergreens generally should not be quite so yellow - by the time that they reach that stage, they're generally past saving. (Notice how long Christmas trees can retain their green colour). This is not to discourage you; bonsai is all about learning from experiences (and from other sources, no doubt), so even if you may lose this one, you should keep on trying! Collected material usually is not the best way to start bonsai for a beginner. Generally, they have poorly-developed root systems, are less vigorous, and thus more difficult to keep alive after collection. The fact that most beginners are very eager to engage in styling, this reduces the tree's chance of survival even more. A better place to begin may be with nursery-grown stock, as they are generally in much better condition (health-wise) than collected plants. You don't have to spend a lot of money on expensive plants: a couple of one-gallon shrubs can go a long way. Before heading off to get more plants, though, a trip to the library or bookstore may be beneficial. If you search "Book" in this forum, you'll get quite a few threads that had good recommendations. (My personal suggestion is The Bonsai Workshop by Herb L. Gustafson, one of the first ones I read.) There's a lot out there to learn, but it's far more easier, faster, and cheaper to learn from others than it is from your own mistakes. Also, keep an open mind - no one source can be exactly right or the authority. Above all, remember to keep the hobby fun! -Audric |
