I gathered some acorns in the California desert last fall, planted them in a pot, and now they are coming up. As I live in a cold climate, I will need to winter them indoors. Can I bonsai a live oak? How long do I let the seedlings grow before starting to train them?

Yes they're used for bonsai, but 3-5 yrs down the road maybe for yours. You could always find some other trees to work on while you're waiting!

I have never tried growing bonsai, but I've been giving it some thought. As such, I've been doing much reading on the subject. My understanding is that most bonsai need to be outside to survive. That being said, you'd most likely have to keep a tree that's from a dry desert area inside fall, winter and spring in Minnesota. Even in the summer I'm not so sure that a desert tree is going to like our sticky, humid days. But I guess that if you could provide the right atmospheric conditions for your tree indoors all year round it might work. Good luck.
